I had just finished University and was completing a summer internship for a tech consultancy firm in the Innovation Centre, working down the corridor from the Catalyst Team. One day during lunch I bumped into a friend from my course who was telling me how she had just joined Catalyst programme and how she was now working with multiple different businesses on a wide variety of projects. She told me all about Catalyst and I was instantly interested in the programme as variation in work and exposure to different businesses was something I was craving, having just recently graduated and being unsure of what route to take straight out of university.
After introducing myself to Lucy on the stairwell and informing her of my interest in the role, I shortly then found myself interviewing with Liam and then sat in front of Mike and Simon being interviewed about why I wanted to join the Catalyst team and what I’d bring to the team. After 3 interviews and a lot of nervous waiting, I finally received an e-mail telling me I had been successful in joining the team and was invited to attend my first day…
My first day however would also be a Catalyst team building day held at 68 Middle Street rather than any ‘typical’ day in the office. And as if first days couldn’t get any more nerve-racking, I was also expected to give a 10-minute presentation about me and my life to date to an audience of my new colleagues whom I had never met before! Fortunately it seems the Catalyst Team are a weird and wonderful group of people so my presentation nerves had quickly vanished after watching others present on their lives. After the presentations we were then split into teams and given the task of building a structure out of dry spaghetti and marshmallows, a task which my team failed miserably. I don’t think I could have asked for a better first day as I had an instant 10-minute insight into my colleagues’ lives which made me less nervous and I felt like I knew everyone well straight away. We even all went for a pint after – result!
Having then completed my induction with Lucy, Liam and Simon on Tuesday morning I was then thrown into the deep end and given my first project to begin working on that afternoon. I’m super excited to be working on a variety of projects with a huge array of businesses who operate in various industries. I can already tell this year is going to push me out of my comfort zone and straight into the deep end of work, helping me develop both the skills and knowledge to overcome any business challenge.
Bring it on Catalyst!
