Kickstarting my career with Catalyst
I joined the Catalyst Team in September last year with no idea what I wanted to do with my career.
I left University not knowing how to apply my Psychology degree in the real world, not knowing whether I even wanted Psychology to be a part of my career. After 4 years studying, I wanted to try something new and different.
I remember my first day vividly. I was thrown straight into the deep end with a client meeting at 10am. Feeling overwhelmed and scared, I put on my best front and tried to portray the idea I knew what I was doing. I started my Catalyst journey feeling anxious about taking on new projects, nervous and intimidated when meeting business owners.
Now, fast forward 8 months. I’ve built relationships with my clients, who have not only given me valuable insight into the business world, but also taught me a vast range of new skills.
From the very beginning, the Catalyst scheme pushed me out of my comfort zone. I was taking on projects where I had little to no understanding of the topic and by the end, I had a whole bank of knowledge.
My first few projects gave me the opportunity to try something new, completely different to anything I’d done before. One project involved content creation for a marketing company. Another was a social media piece for a clothing brand. Another was an insight project for a reward and recognition company.
I quickly came to realise the projects that allowed me to use my psychology knowledge were the ones I enjoyed the most. Although challenging, these were the projects I felt I could really dive into, and the ones I found most rewarding.
After working with different clients, all on a mission to improve health and wellbeing in the workplace, I found my existing skills and knowledge to be much more valuable than I ever believed.
One of my favourite projects has been working with WeThrive, an innovative company who have created an employee engagement tool for businesses. This ongoing project included a huge range of activities including data enrichment, customer support and content creation. The most rewarding part of this project was helping to build an entire library of resources for WeThrive customers to use. Not only did I find it extremely interesting, I enjoyed being able to make a considerable impact on their business as well as their customers.
Catalyst has given me the opportunity to work with an amazing range of unique businesses and take part in such a wide array of events and projects. I’ve helped clients out at exhibitions, attended client-run breakfast workshops, client photoshoots and much more. I’ve spent my time absorbing everything I can from the inspirational people I’ve met and the work I’ve carried out.
What three key lessons have I learnt from my time at Catalyst?
Welcome new challenges and have confidence in your own abilities
Things don’t always go to plan but learn from your mistakes.
Don’t be scared to ask questions and share your own ideas.
Time really does fly when you’re having fun and I can safely say I had plenty of it working at SiNC. I’ll be leaving Catalyst behind with an understanding of my own values, confidence and skills I never knew I had. Whilst I’m sad to be leaving SiNC and all of the people I’ve grown close to, I’m ready to move on to the next stage of my career and will take all of the valuable lessons I’ve learned with me. I hope the next Catalyst intake get as much out of it as I did and embrace everything the scheme has to offer.
