My first day at Catalyst was not what I was expecting. Instead of going to Falmer, I found myself on a train to East Croydon amongst the weary eyed travellers of the 7.48 train from Brighton, it had been raining that morning too. But by the time I arrived at Croydon the weather had changed and the sun was starting to show its face.
Obviously, I am rather nervous about my first day on the job, but I power on, after all I am coming to Catalyst so that I can experience a range of business practices and how they operate in an attempt to figure out what I might want to do in the future as a career after I changed my mind about doing a PhD.
So, I make my way up to the 11th floor of One Croydon where I finally find my boss, Lucy. Having always been a student this is my first real job and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect then I arrived. I was given a short tour around the Innovation Centre before a brief introduction to Catalyst.
Then I’m straight into meeting a client called Finder! They gave me an introduction to their company: who they are, what they do, what I’ll be doing, the various login details for email, websites, Slack. They leave me to have a poke around their website and programs so I can start to become familiar with it all.
Then it’s roughly lunch time, so it’s off out the building to find something to eat, obviously I’m not very sure what to do, how long I have, what is the etiquette? So I settle for the nearby Sainsbury’s and a £3 meal deal, which was rather nice as I had forgotten to have breakfast that morning in my nervousness to get to the train in time.
Getting back to work I’m set off on making my first webpage for Finder, a page about Virgin Money’s international currency exchange. At this point it’s been a quite a while, so I’m a bit rusty with my HTML and it takes me time to get used to using WordPress so this takes up pretty much the rest of my afternoon.
By the end of the day I am feeling rather tired, but it was an enjoyable first day, I had done things I had never done before and already started to learn new skills in webpage creation. Only time will tell what the future holds for me at Catalyst, but I am excited to find out!
