BA Criminology and Sociology
Sian has recently graduated from the University of Sussex with a degree in Criminology and Sociology. Some of her favourite modules included Qualitative and Quantitative research methods, Postcolonial Europe and her dissertation. Her dissertation topic: ‘Male Victims of Heterosexual Domestic Violence’, allowed her to conduct her own research as she independently carried out her study to produce her own findings. This resulted in her gaining a first for the project! Her degree helped to develop her love for research, creativity and stepping outside of her comfort zone.
In her final year of university, Sian signed up for StartUpSussex which opened her eyes to the world of business. The program allowed her to meet and work with young entrepreneurs, learn about business and create new business ideas. Towards the end of the program Sian presented her own business idea for a new form of ‘positive social media’ which aimed to combat mental health issues created by social media. Although Sian’s idea was not taken forward, she was inspired by other young entrepreneurs and had a newfound interest in start-ups. Sian was thrilled to join the Catalyst Team to help her learn more about business, develop a new skillset and hopefully make an impact in the world of business.
Sian worked in Skechers Brighton alongside her degree and gained multiple awards for her work ethic and sales ability (she has incredible shoe knowledge). The role developed her interpersonal skills, customer service, organisation and time management. Sian loved working in Brighton as it allowed her to meet a wide range of people from different backgrounds. Sian is now interested in stepping away from retail, working with new businesses, developing her skills and trying new things.
During university, Sian also attended integrated martial arts classes which she aims to continue in the future. Sian has always been sporty and was in both basketball and netball teams throughout secondary school and sixth form. In her spare time Sian enjoys going to the gym, spending time with family and friends, and eating. Sian is passionate about travelling and aims to one day make it a hobby (when she has enough money), her recent trips include Miami South Beach, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Marrakesh. In the future, Sian plans to travel to Canada, Thailand and all over the Caribbean. She also aspires to learn a new language.
