Leya Carle

BA International Relations and Development

Leya is an International Relations and Development undergraduate, studying at the University of Sussex and has joined the Catalyst Team for her professional placement year. In her second year of university, Leya signed up for StartUpSussex. The program allowed her to meet young entrepreneurs and learn about creating a business. Although Leya did not present her own business idea, she really enjoyed the workshops and was inspired to work with start-ups.

Her previous employment experience in hospitality as a waitress and bartender provided her with a desire to work in customer-focused environments. More recently, her summer job in digital marketing for a start-up confirmed her interest in the world of business and taught her valuable skills she hopes to develop  in the Catalyst Team.

Leya was born and raised in France but is also half American. She achieved an American International Baccalaureate in France, as an equivalent to A levels. She then spent a year in Paris to study History before applying to the University of Sussex to change degrees and experience studying abroad. This was one of the best decisions she made and she’s greatly enjoyed her time in Brighton. Leya hopes to transfer the range of skills and different world perspectives developed from her degree in International Relations and Development to a career in the business world.

Outside of the working environment, Leya enjoys a number of different activities. She is still part of University societies (because there are some perks to being a student!) such as the Debating Team and the International Development Society, in which she used to be a social and academic secretary, mostly creating events for students to enjoy. She is also invested in fitness and enjoys going to the gym, swimming and street dancing! Overall, she likes to keep busy and loves to travel on the weekends and when possible further away; like that time she traveled to Thailand and ate crickets for breakfast.

Thrilled to be part of such an amazing opportunity and be surrounded by such resourceful and supportive individuals, Leya hopes to meet new people and enhance her employability credibility.
