Kelly Chan

BA English and Media Studies (hons)

Being a recent English and Media studies graduate from the University of Sussex, Kelly has grown into an independent, critical and creative thinker through her studies of literature and the ever-changing technological world. Whilst learning the precise layout of essays and note-taking in lectures, Kelly gained invaluable and rich life skills during her time at university. In the three years, Kelly practiced her skills in level one British sign language, engaged in an 8-week coding programme, Code First: Girls, creating a group website and discovered her two passions for marketing and teaching.

Whilst at university, Kelly worked as a part-time tutor. Kelly taught at various East and West Sussex primary and secondary schools where she enthused over creative stories and helped students bring their ideas alive through the power of writing. Alongside this, in her final year, Kelly participated in a school-placement module. As an assistant teacher at BHASVIC college, she was able to help second year college students’ study for their A2 English exams as an assistant teacher at BHASVIC college.

During the summer of her second year at university, Kelly was a summer marketing intern for The Student Room. In her 8-week internship, Kelly learnt about the importance of call-to-actions, telling the company story and reflecting the company’s ideas and values in innovative and creative methods. While learning a lot about marketing, it was in this internship where Kelly discovered her love for promoting and marketing ideas that she was passionate about.

Through her tutoring job at Sussex Writes, Kelly branched out into social media marketing for the tutoring organisation. After managing the Sussex Writes Facebook and LinkedIn social media pages, Kelly had the opportunity to help develop the new website as website content developer. In her new role, Kelly created videos, edited images and wrote the Sussex Writes history to express and enrich the story of the tutoring programme.

In her free time, Kelly enjoys travelling. In the last two years, she has visited Lyon, France to discover the adventures lying in Vieux Lyon and Prague, Czech Republic to try the infamous goulash and experience the lively and up-beat culture. As well as travelling, as a typical English graduate, Kelly is a passionate reader of fictional novels from a variety of eighteenth-century literature and Stephen King horrors and as a Media studies graduate, she enjoys watching those novels develop on film.

Although she was a tutor for two years and taught others, Kelly is now keen to learn new skills, meet amazing connections and take on challenges in her role as Catalyst team member at the Sussex Innovation Centre.
