BA International Business
Jamila is an International Business undergraduate, studying at the University of Sussex and has joined the Catalyst Team for her professional placement year. She has joined the Catalyst Team to gain an insight into the world of start-ups, with hopes to eventually start her own. She has had a passion for business since GCSE and has always seemed to have an entrepreneurial spirit within her. From the age of 8, she was baking cakes and bread and selling them to neighbours (mate’s rates of course). She now enjoys making cakes for family and friends on special occasions.
When beginning her studies at Sussex, Jamila knew she wanted to expand her knowledge of national business into international business. Undertaking modules such as International Business Environment and International Marketing have further sparked her interest in operating a business not only domestically, but overseas too.
Jamila’s interest in events sparked from organising a surprise 50th party. She has since been involved in organising larger events for the Sussex Careers and Employability Centre and attending interesting launch events with friends. The process of putting together concepts, sourcing venues, negotiating with suppliers and meticulous budgeting all coming together in an amazing event is something Jamila can see herself excelling at. By gaining her placement at Catalyst, she hopes to explore her passion of events more and work with exciting start-ups who share the same enthusiasm.
Out of hours Jamila enjoys LOTS of food and drink, particularly going out for brunches and dinners when she can. She has often been told that brunch is not a hobby, but she believes this to be untrue. Her ideal day is a series of tasting menus at various alfresco restaurants, preferably somewhere sunny. Her love of food works hand in hand with her love of exercise. Especially HIIT training, running and yoga which she likes to do as often as she can.
Jamila has big aspirations of owning her own luxury events company. She is very excited to get stuck in and gain experience to understand the inner workings of start-ups and scaleups to prepare her to start her own venture after graduating.
